Can best friends date?

I've been best friends with this girl I've known for 6 months and we're really close. When I first met her, I liked her & she knew, but she had just gotten out of a relationship with this douche bag so she didn't wanna start anything. Since than we've grown to become super close & really good friends. However, I honestly still like her a lot whereas I think she might only see me as her best friend. And just one more fact to add in as to why I'm confused, for the past month she has slightly liked her douche bag ex boyfriend again. But just this past week, she's become extremely upset with him and she told me she is done with him now. So I'm wondering now, in due time, will I have a chance? Or should I stick to being friends?
