How should i store my rifle?

I just bought my first rifle (Marlin 795) and need some tips on properly storing it? I plan on having it stored for long periods of time without it getting rust. I don't have allot of money or room, just a hallway closet. I also heard that a foam padded case would cause rust and it's just for transporting firearms... thats all i have...
