My macbook pro won't read any memory cards?

I've had my Macbook Pro for about a year now and suddenly it stopped reading my memory cards. I thought it was a matter of restarting the computer, but I was wrong, it still didn't read my memory card. I tried to plug in my camera (with the memory card in it of course) through USB, but it still didn't read it; I tried a different camera with a different memory card and it couldn't read it. nothing pops up. i went to my finder and no device pops up at all. Whereas my camera could read the card without any problems at all, so I'm curious what has happened. Is there anything I can try before I have to give up and to go to an Apple Store to get it fixed? Please help! Thanks!
